Starting at $149.00, €183.00, ₹11,090, £256.75 the Poco M3 will take over the market with its large display, huge battery, good looks, nice camera set-up and stereo speakers. There are disadvantages as well.

Advantages

1.. High Res display
2.. Big battery
3.. Good looks
4.. Unique design
5.. IR blaster

Disadvantages

1.. No Ultra-wide angle lens
2.. No NFC
3.. Selfies are odd
4.. No 4K video recording

Display And Design

It has a 6,53 inches FHD+ display with 395ppi density and 19:5:9 aspect ratio. It has 400 nits (typ) brightness and 83.4% screen-to-body ratio. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front. The sides and the back are made with Plastic. The back of the phone has a leather-finished plastic which looks very cool on the Poco M3.

The design is unique on the Poco M3 and is not a rebranded version of any other phone. There is a big glass slab at the back in which resides the triple camera set-up and the Poco branding in big letters. The design is quite attractive and standard. The bezels are quite small except the chin which is a bit large than other smartphones. There is a 8 MP selfie camera in a small cut-out at the top center of the screen.

It is available in three colors: Cool Blue, Poco Yellow, Power Black. The dimensions of the phone are 162.3 x 77.3 x 9.6mm. The phone weighs 198g.

Battery and charging

The Poco M3 packs a 6000mAh monster battery which lasts 2 days on a single charge if you are a moderate user with occasional gaming (3-4 hrs/day). The smartphone packs a 22.5W fast charger ion the box though the smartphone supports only upto 18W charging. So the chargers aare a bit overqualified. Reverse charging feature is available with a USB-C reversible charging port.

Camera

There is a triple rear camera set-up and a single selfie camera. The rear camera set-up includes a 48MP high res sensor, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor. Cameras are one of those areas where the Poco M3 lacks. It does not have an Ultra-wide angle lens and also does not support 4K video recording(only upto 1080p@30fps). Photos can be captured in RAW with the RAW mode. There is night mode and Portrait mode. However, the specs are quite decent at this price. The 8MP selfie camera is decent and shoots good pictures with sufficient details and light. Features include time-lapse, portrait mode, timed selfie and Panorama selfie.

Rear camera video features include time-lapse and slow-mo videos @120fps.

Performance and UI

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 Octa-core SoC(11nm), the performance is up to the mark with the competition. Heavy games like PUBG, ASPHALT can be played smoothly at little low settings, at high settings frame drops and lags can be noticed. And what would you expect at $149. GPU is Adreno 610. It runs Android 10 with MIUI 12 on top. To be honest there are tons of ADs and bloatware.

Storage/Memory

The Poco M3 comes in two variants: 4GB+64GB and 4GB+128GB. The 128G on-board storage is based on UFS 2.2 whereas the 64GB storage is based on UFS 2.1. There is LPDDR4X RAM. The storage can be expanded with the dedicated microSDXC slot. So, there is no lack of space in this device.

Connectivity

WLAN: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot
Bluetooth: 5.0, A2DP, LE
GPS: Yes with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS
NFC: No
Radio: FM radio
Infrared port: Yes
USB: USB Type-C, USB-OTG

Sound and sensors

The sound quality is quite good on the Poco M3 with stereo speakers. There is 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors include: Face unlock, Finger-print (Side-mounted), Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, Electronic compass, IR Blaster.

Bottom Line

The smartphone is recommended as this offers some specs that are rarely seen at this price point. There are no issues with the smartphone (not with my unit). Camera performance is a bit down but not bad. The competition between Xiaomi and Realme has the pushed the boundaries of what smartphones can have at a price point. There are some very good, no compensation phones that you must consider buying and the Poco M3 is one of them.
