The tech world has seen some major upgrades since the start of 2021. With the Xiaomi Mi 11 launched with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC and 108MP camera, the start was good followed by the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Well, the trend is continuing and companies are releasing value for money smartphones. The OPPO Reno 5 pro 5G has landed in the market with a new Dimensity 1000+ SoC, the first in India, super fast charging and longer battery back-up, Android 11 out of the box and running ColorOS 11.1 on top. The cameras are also awesome but does require a bit of improvement in some arears. The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is priced 35,999 Rs. in India and about 410 EUR in the global market.
Here, in this blog you will get to know about everything about the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G and also you will be able to make a choice as to buy it or not.
Box Contents
First things first, so you are getting all that a phone should provide at this price. The box packs a USB type-C cable, a transparent case sim, tray ejector tool, 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger, USB Type-C earphones and the Oppo Reno 5 Pro with amazing design and feel.
Design
The unboxing experience was great and to be very honest; mid range smartphones are now-a-days providing much better unboxing when compared to flagships. Well after unboxing and keeping the accessories aside, I picked the smartphone and truly I was very happy. The phone just felt amazing and great in-hand. It’s very slim body with curved display and light weight makes you fall in love with it’s build. The company mentions it’s design as Oppo Reno glow and specifies that at the microscopic level each particle at the back of the phone behave like individual diamonds providing that lustrous effect to the glass back. Well, the company has succeeded to a great extent in achieving that glow. It was launched in Aurora Blue, Moonlight Night, Starry Night, and Star Wish Red colors.
Build
The build quality is premium and I have no issues with it. The colors look great on the back of the phone and display different shades at different angles. The thickness is just 76mm and it weighs 173 g. The case perfectly fits the phone and we did the drop test with the case put on in which the phone passed. The display is protected on the front by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and on the back by the Corning gorilla glass 3. The durability is good and the phone is very resistant to scratches on the back and front panels. The sides of the phone are built with plastic but we really loved the in-hand feel of it.
PORTS AND BUTTONS
On the bottom right of the glass back is the OPPO branding in white letters printed in a vertical fashion. At the bottom side is the USB port, speaker grill and the sim tray. The Volume rocker is on the left and the power button on the right. At the top side is written Designed For Reno and also has the noise cancellation microphone. It has a dual nano sim card slot where you will have to compromise on one of your sims if you want to expand storage(shared slot).
How good is the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G Display?
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G features a 16.6 cm(6.53 inches) 90Hz HRD10+ OLED display with up to 180Hz of touch sampling rate. The curved display is so beautiful with no bezels on the sides that you just feel happy. The screen-to-body ratio is well over 92% and the Eye Care display emits very little blue light and has many certifications as well. The multimedia experience is great but could have been taken to the next level if the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G came with stereo speakers instead off the mono speakers.
What is the Camera Capable of?
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G boasts a quad rear camera set-up including a 64MP high-res primary sensor, a 8MP Ultra-wide angle lens and a 2MP macro and depth sensors. The front snapper is a 32MP single sensor embedded into the tiny cut-out at the top left corner of the screen.
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G has lots of camera modes and filters. The AI scene enhancement tool recognizes the subject and optimizes the colors to have a bit more saturation and contrast (not the same in every scenario). There are many other unique camera features like shooting stills containing 108MP in every shot and night portrait mode.
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro is not just a photography freak smartphone, it is best for videography as well. The AI highlight video algorithm senses the ambient light and makes necessary settings and post processing to make the darker regions brighter in a beautiful manner. With Ultra-night mode for videos, it lits up the subject and the background in a proportionate ratio. When you shoot videos in Live HDR mode, the darker regions are boosted with colors and the much brighter and over exposed regions are controlled by the ISP thus producing awesome eye-pleasing and better optimized videos. The Dual-view video mode is a mode dedicated for vloggers and allows shooting with the front and the rear cameras at the same time; thus capturing the maximum details possible at a time. There are also other modes which make the subject completely stand out from the rest of the background. The AI color portrait mode focuses on the subject and the whole background in the video is shot in black and white with the colorful subject getting the most attention. However, the feature is only useful when you are recording a video in which you are the only subject detectable by the AI. Similar is the function of the AI monochrome video mode that highlights only the Red, Green and Blue colors in the video while the rest of the video is black and white. Well the applications of these features are very limited, it is good to have them and we don’t blame OPPO for including them in the Camera App.
Yes, the above sentences were on-paper specs and their description. In day-to-day usage we felt that the videos taken were required a bit more improvement and also there were stabilization issues when recording in 4K. So, yes there is more room for improvement.
Also the Camera app comes with a first party video editing app SOLOOP which is a pro video editing application with many functions especially optimized for the OPPO Reno smartphones.
How powerful and efficient is the Reno 5 Pro?
For years the Qualcomm chipsets have been used in majority of smartphones; however, their rival MediaTek came with the Dimensity series of chipsets which perform awesome and many Chinese brands like Realme, OPPO and Vivo have turned towards Dimensity.
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is the first Dimensity 1000+ powered smartphone to be launched in India. The phone promises smooth and consistent performance. Comparing the Dimensity 1000+ with Snapdragon chipsets, it would give a close competition to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. That’s based on An Tu Tu scores. The Dimensity 1000+ is a 5G chipset offering very smooth gaming and fast video rendering. The 5G network connectivity is great (tested from America) and the phone supports Wi-fi 6. The chipset is aided by the Mali-G77 GPU. The call quality was very good in India with 4GVoLTE.
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G runs Android 11 out of the box with ColorOS 11.1 on top. The UI is highly customizable and to be very honest, my experience using it was amazing. Yes, there are plenty of pre-installed applications, most of which can be uninstalled. Thankfully, the OPPO’s stock apps didn’t show any promotional ads. The Always-on display can be customized and you can also create a unique design of yours. Other features in the ColorOS 11.1 include (FlexDrop)shrinking the apps into floating windows so that they can be monitored even while using other apps. There is also a gamer mode which lets you mute all the notifications, calls and other disturbances while gaming to experience the best out of it. Also, the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G lets you choose between three levels of contrast for the Dark Mode and apply it to every third-party application.
Well, now comes the best part of the UI. The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G allows you to create two different systems in a same device for increased security and the most privacy. Also, the good part being that both the systems can be unlocked via different finger prints only so that no one opens your device and your private folders without your knowledge. You can also add apps to the Bullet Screen List and all the notifications from that app will glide from the right of the screen and exit from the left of the screen thus minimizing distractions. Also the speed and opacity of the notifications can be controlled and customized. There are also options to control and regulate the touch sensitivity, swipe sensitivity and Gyroscope sensitivity of the display while playing different games. The settings can be applied differently for different games according to your convenience.
Well to be very honest, if I were to give and award to the a UI and if the candidates were the ColorOS, OxygenOS and OneUI; then I would pick the ColorOS for sure.
What is the On-board Storage and is it Expandable?
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G comes in a single configuration with 128 gigs of on-board storage and 12 gigs of fast LPDDR4X RAM. You can expand it externally compromising on one of your sims (Shared microSD slot). Well, that seemed to me like a con on the smartphone as now-a-days 128 gigs are close to nothing. You want to record long 4K videos and have it always on your device. Well, that might be a bit difficult because according to rough calculations the phone can store up to 2 hours of 4K video recorded on your smartphone leaving no further bytes for use. That’s assuming that there are no applications, music, games or any other images and videos on your smartphone. Anyways, that’s a little to compromise considering the other features and on-paper powerful specs.
How long does the battery last on the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G?
The company has worked a lot and also claimed a lot on the battery. A single digit battery can provide you 1.5 hours of WhatsApp chatting (advertised) by enabling the Super Power Saving Mode. The 4350mAh battery charges itself completely in just 30 minutes with the OPPO 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger that comes inside the box. Claims are even higher on this note, that only 5 minutes of charging can provide you with hours of video playback time.
Is the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G worth buying?
The OPPO Reno 4 Pro which lunched last year was a bit hard to recommend to anyone because of its underpowered SoC and also less performance to money ratio. However the company has addressed this issue in the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G which is priced the same as its predecessor Rs. 35,990.
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is a very worthy choice to make considering the Powerful Dimensity 1000+ processor, stunning curved display, premium design, amazing camera specs and features, larger battery back-up with amazing charging speed and also the efficient and highly customizable ColorOS 11.1. The camera quality is great, be it photos or videos; they all look really good. the performance is up to the mark and the multimedia experience is also really with its Dolby Atmos support for better audio. I will definitely recommend this phone to anyone who wants to buy a device under Rs. 4000 and wants to get the most out of it.
What more could have been added?
It wouldn’t have hurt if the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G came with stereo speakers and also the video requires some improvement. Hoping to see OPPO fix the issues through a update. Also, it would have been great if the phone had expandable storage even if it charged some 2000 Rs. extra. That’s it about the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G. Stay tuned with the website for more smartphone stuff and detailed reviews. PEACE!!
Amazed and aww. How perfect this is. It took time for me to swallow that there is no other page than this, who have explained the reno 5 better. This is a breathtaking review. Well done
